STEP 3: SETTING UP YOUR ENVIRONMENT

Database Creation and Product Registration

The SYNC Pro Product Suite operates in a SQL environment and requires establishment of a database. The licensed product modules and options also need to be registered and the appropriate licence key issued.

The Starter Pack is supplied with a FREE singular licence key entitling the user to operate a singular demo database instance limited to 100 seats.

Run SYNC Pro Product Registration module: (Start menu > All Programs\ScanTrack\SYNC Pro Product Registration).

Create Master Database

  • Select Master Database Setup option on the main screen.
  • Enter SQL Server name or SQL Server Instance name and Authentication mode details

Create Demo Database

  • Select Product Registration option on main screen
  • Leave all fields blank - and select the Demo Database button (No registration number is required for the Demo Database)
  • Enter the database size (3 MB should be sufficient for demonstration purposes).
  • Enter the database file growth. (1 MB should suffice)
  • Click the Create button to create the Demo Database.

Please Note: You can only create a Demonstration Database for 100 licenses with the Starter Pack. Should you, after evaluation, require more licenses or functionality of the full SYNC PRO Product Suite, please select the Upgrade Request option on the main screen or use the Contact Information option to contact ScanTrack support directly.

Crystal 10 Reporting – The system uses Crystal Reporting 10 and this will need to be installed if already not on the machine being used as the administrator workstation. Crystal.msi Msi can be found in C:\Program Files\Scantrack SA (Pty) Ltd\Admin\Crystal10\CRRedistr2005_x86.msi

SYNC Pro Collector setup

Run SYNC Pro Inventory Manager from Start menu: All Programs\ScanTrack\SYNC Pro Inventory Manager and perform the following steps:

Connect to Demo Database

  • Select File> Select Database .
  • The Server Name drop down will display all available SQL Server Instances on the network. Please select the server on which you created the SYNC Pro Master Database during Product Registration.
  • Select the appropriate SQL Server authentication mode (Mixed mode is recommended).
  • The database drop down (after selecting refresh) will display the available databases registered to your SYNC Pro Product Suite. (i.e. The “SyncProDemo” Database).
  • You will now be connected to the Demo Database – please note that no data can currently be displayed as nothing has been collected or imported as yet!

Collection Preferences

  • The SYNC Pro Collector has multiple methods for discovering and inventorying devices operating on a network. In addition there are number of preferences and options about the type of information to be gathered from each device and where it is to be stored that need to be set.
  • To set/review these - Select File>Preferences>Options.
  • Select Path Tab – Use browse to select the path of the Collector install’s INF folder.
  • Collector1 / 2 Tabs - Please note the preferences have already been set as defaults in the collector 1 and collector 2 tabs, and it is recommended that these be used if using the SYNC Pro Starter Pack.
  • File Scan Tab – This allows for a full scan of files residing on the device. It is recommended that this is NOT used on the whole network or for general demonstration as it will cause the collection agent to run on each machine for a considerable amount of time. Use of this facility should be limited to specific devices or for looking for specific file types.
  • Establish Collection Strategy – There are a number of ways that device information can be collected and decisions need to be made as to how best these various modes can be utilised to maximise collection results. The Matrix below provides an overview of the options available and their uses.
  • Detailed instructions for setting up collection folders and use of these various methods are contained in the user guide.

Mode

When used

Setup Requirements:

On Going Collection

Used where there is a need to update machine inventory on a regular basis.

Login Script– Inventory process will be started when device is authenticated against the domain.

On devices that are members of the domain and log on regularly, providing ongoing regularly updated collection information.

The Collector requires a network share to be set up on a server to which all users have full rights and a login script needs to be published in AD Group Policies .

Collection On Demand

These two alternative methods of remote collection  are best used on devices addressable on the network that facilities and facilitate once-off collection on demand, and is suitable for servers etc.

Execute Schedule (Windows Scheduled Task)

This method schedules a windows task on the selected devices and nothing is installed on the target device.

The Collector requires a setwork share to be set up on a server to which all users have full rights .

Execute Service

This method invokes and executes a service on the target device.

None – Driven from Management view in SYNC Pro Inventory Manager and execute as a service on target devices.

Manual Collection

Used to collect information on devices not addressable on the network.

Driven from a collector agent on memory stick.

Install the collector.msi onto memory stick and run when plugged into target device.
